Career Ideas for Working in Nature

Those who like working outside have a number of different career options available. Jobs in nature can include those that are of a scientific nature or those that are production based. Some careers involve working with animals, while others involve work in conservation-related fields. Most careers of this type require formal education at the college level and a strong background in the biological sciences.



Conservation Scientists and Foresters
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), jobs in conservation science and forestry are expected to grow about 12 percent between 2008 and 2018. Conservation scientists and foresters work to manage and preserve the the nation's natural resources and forests. Some work in private industry as advisers who help landowners better utilize their land, while others work on behalf of government agencies that attempt to restore and preserve public lands. According to the BLS, workers in these fields usually specialize in one particular area, such as forest economics or soil conservation. The bureau also notes that these conservation experts made a median salary of $60,160 as of May 2009.

Landscape Architects
Landscape architects design aesthetically pleasing and functional outdoor spaces. These spaces include public parks, college campuses, residential areas and any other place where an eye-catching landscaping job might need to be completed. According to the BLS, jobs for landscape architects should grow about 20 percent from 2008 to 2018. A bachelor's or master's degree is typically required to work in this field. The median pay for landscape architects was $60,560 in May 2009, according to the bureau.

Farmer
Farmers work outside every day. The work in a variety of different settings such as dairy farms, crop farms or even large ranches where livestock is raised primarily for meat production. Some individuals serve as farm managers in large commercial operations. A farmer's work usually begins first thing in the morning when the sun comes up and generally does not end until the sun goes down. The BLS notes that the income of farmers can vary and fluctuate greatly from one year to the next because of the cyclical nature of the work and its dependence upon the food-production market.

Agricultural Scientist
Agricultural scientists conduct research to improve the amount, quality and safety of the nation's food supply. Agricultural scientists work in a variety of different specialty areas. Some conduct research to determine ways to convert crops into fuels, while others seek to find ways to improve crop yield or eliminate pest problems. A bachelor's degree is required for entry-level positions in this field, but academic positions usually require a master's degree or Ph.D. According to the BLS, animal scientists made $56,960 as a median salary, while food scientists made $59,630 and soil and plant scientists made $59,180 as of May 2009.
