Teen Boy Styling Tips

As a teen boy, you start to develop your own personal style. Use this time to learn the fundamentals of being well-dressed and also learn how to implement your own twist to keep things interesting. Remember, while there are a few golden rules of fashion, it's also important to have fun and wear things with confidence

On Top
T-shirts and shirts should be the appropriate size--they shouldn't overwhelm you. If you're tall, seek out big and tall shops so you're able to buy shirts that are long enough for your torso. While T-shirts and polo shirts are ideal for everyday activities, when it's time to dress up, go with a button-up shirt. Dark colors like eggplant and navy look stylish and showcase your style. You can also opt for skinny ties like those worn in the 1960s, which are modern on young men. If you're buying a sport jacket or suit, shop specialty stores like Banana Republic or Club Monaco. Jackets sold at these stores will have a modern, streamlined cut versus the boxy, traditional cuts sold in department stores.

On Bottom
Jeans are functional for a teenage boy. Dark denim works for school, casual events and family outings. Distressed denim is trendy, but it isn't as versatile as a dark pair of jeans, so try to round out your closet with a few basic pieces of denim before you go for a distressed pair. After all, holes and fraying won't work for your grandmother's birthday party. Khakis are good for school assemblies and anything you have to be dressed up for without wearing a suit. When it comes to khakis and trousers, stay away from pleated or cuffed pants, which read as old fashioned. The modern look for men is a slightly relaxed, but streamlined leg opening.

Coordinating
Remember that things don't have to match, they just have to make sense. For example, a green shirt with green pants doesn't work, but a green shirt with navy pants definitely works. Keep color tones together; cool and warm colors typically work with hues of the same family. Be careful with texture, as it can sometimes be an overload. A nubby knit sweater with corduroy pants reads as grandpa, so break things up by adding basic cotton or twill. Whatever you wear, remember that confidence is key, so stand up straight, and you'll instantly appear sure of yourself and far more stylish.
Good luck.
